while some were submerged in water
the trunks of massive columns rose above the trees
while the shadows lengthened in the present
and asserted the survival of the past
but the layers of successive cities were clearly apparent
the mask in the windrose gave little away

and since replaced by more utilitarian concerns
trophies of a triumph long since vanished
and fixed among the mouldings and ornament
remembrancing conquest and it’s origins in war
its symbols lacking explanation
time was inscribed in stone
the script was old, but the carving was recent
and the surfaces tremoured before the writing on the wall
where near and far had lost their meaning
the shadow suggesting an intimate immensity
a geometry of shadows and light
and formed its own geometry
as nature returned
and bore the expression of their abandoned centuries
the city’s stones groaned with fatigue
and although the city could be reconstructed
where the bodies of the founders formed the city
and excavated to form the foundations of the city
colossal fragments remaining still
the incantations that were performed
